A
cautionary tale-recently a client called me to defend him against
his first ticket in fifteen years. He is a salesman who is
completely dependent on his driver’s license to do his job. He
was reluctant to employ an attorney because he felt sure he could go
another fifteen years without a ticket. That ticket was for
speeding twenty miles over the speed limit, a four-point violation.
Three days later he was cited for proceeding through a yellow light,
a three-point violation. In Michigan, had he paid both tickets
and accrued seven total points on his license, his license to drive
could have been severely restricted or revoked placing his
livelihood in jeopardy. Also, any points stay in effect for
three years and on your driving record for ten years!
My client’s and my experience is that traffic tickets tend to run
in streaks. Do not count on this ticket being your last!utionary
